This short booklet details how you go about submitting your final report to CIM.
When preparing your assignment you will need to carry out some secondary research and read around the subjects concerned with each task; you may draw from a range of material in order to compile your assignment, but you must re-write things in your own words or use quotation marks if you are quoting material direct.
You should identify and acknowledge all sources/methodologies/applications used within the text and then reference them fully in a Reference List using the Harvard system otherwise you might be challenged for plagiarising other people’s work. There is nothing more tedious than having to compile a bibliography once you think have finished your work, so it is a good idea to note down the full academic reference of any sources as you use them (including websites), otherwise it can be difficult to locate them again at a later date.

- Read the brief – only do what the brief asks
Candidates need to adhere to the command words and do what they ask. Only use evaluative and analytical approaches when required and avoid excessive description when not asked. Avoid using tables when responses require evaluation. Candidates need to be familiar with the command words before attempting to answer the brief.
Only use executive summaries when required – some candidates are wasting valuable words on executive summaries – it is important to read the brief carefully to check this out. Understand what an executive summary is before attempting to write one – candidates need to check this out with tutors.
Candidates need to relate all aspects of the brief to the chosen context. When required, the analysis, the proposals and recommendations all need to closely link to the chosen scenario.
- Referencing –understand the requirements
Tutors need to prepare candidates so that they are familiar with Harvard Referencing principles and to ensure that they do not potentially lose valuable marks. Candidates need to ensure that inappropriate references such as Wikipedia are not used in their responses.
- Using theory to show understanding
Wider reading around the topics will enable candidates to understand how theory works in practice. Understanding how theory can be used is crucial to developing strong answers that don’t just “theory dump”. Candidates need to be familiar with the entire syllabus to demonstrate knowledge and understanding more fully.
- Using time wisely
Candidates need to use time effectively so that the amount of effort put in relates to marks allocation. This refers to both examinations and assignments. Candidates are advised to complete practice papers to help with time management in the actual examination.
- Getting assignments together ready for submission
Please note that candidates need to ensure they have not used their names within their assignments. Please note that word count information must be included on assignments – candidates need to follow guidelines and ask tutors for advice. Candidates need to be aware of using appendices appropriately – please follow guidelines within brief and remember not to include information unless it has been requested.
Candidates need to present the assignments in the order of the brief in a logical format. Candidates need to avoid formulaic answers – answers that look too similar lack creativity and this may result in valuable marks being lost. Please seek advice from your tutor on how to make it look different yet address the brief.
- Getting to grips with support material
Candidates need to give themselves the best chance of performing well by referring to Senior Examiner website reports, webinars/audio presentations, core texts and recommended text books to ensure fuller understanding.
