This week marks the 5th anniversary of www.marketingtom.com. Boy, how time has flown!
Marketing Tom was the second blog that I set up; the first was Mad About Madrid, which was set up about 2 months previous to this one. The reason I set up this site was that I wanted an easy-to-use website which allow me to post articles about all manner of stories related to Search Engine Optimisation. Indeed, the very first articles dealt with how to get ahead on the search engines and I wrote articles such as:
Which are the main search engines?
Search engine listings – how many of your pages are listed?
Search Engine Marketing – Meta Tags (Step 4)
For the first couple of years I purely wrote on Search Engine Optimisation but over time I started to look at some of the latest Internet Marketing applications and wrote articles such as
A9 – Amazon’s new Search Engine – Awesome! [got that one wrong!]
Keep Track of your To-Do Lists with Ta-da Lists
Tony Blair Podcast – the First by British Prime Minister
The last couple of years have seen a focus on Web 2.0:
Google Acquires Slide Presentation Company Zenter
Power of Facebook
Citizen Marketing for the Democrats
Yahoo!’s new Web 2.0 Tool
Xobni – Now Open To The Public
Twitter – For Those Who Don’t Quite Get It!
In December 2007 I decided that it was time to set up my own company and having considered a number of options for the company, I finally plumped for Marketing Tom Media. After over 4 years (at the time) it seemed illogical to come up with a new name and would also mean that I would have to get used to having a new domain name.
Today, I dedicate my working day, and some, to developing and delivering training courses and consultancy to clients under the name of Marketing Tom Media. The last few courses that I have delivered have been fully subscribed and I hope to offer some new, Web 2.0 courses in the New Year.
Marketing Tom Media is also one of the few CIM Accredited Centres in Wales and the South West that offers the eMarketing Award and clients are also starting to travel some distances (North Wales, South West and Bristol) to come on the courses that I deliver. Under Marketing Tom Media I even managed to travel to Jakarta in April of this year to deliver an eMarketing course.
Many people ask me where the name Marketing Tom comes from. Well, I remember when I was trying to come up with a name for the site I was reading some articles on Tom Peters, the management guru – I actually used to love Tom Peters’ books – and simply decided to mix his name together with the broad term for what I was involved in: Marketing. I also thought, and still think, that the domain name rolls quite nicely off the tongue: Marketing Tom Dot Com!
I’d also like to say thanks to all readers of this blog, attendees on the courses, clients and to the sneezers!
