Vatican Embraces Social Media Revolution

Today is the 43rd World Communications Day and to mark it the Vatican, through its Pontifical Council for Social Communications, has just launched new portal Pope2You which allows users to connect to the Vatican using Social Media. You can now visit the YouTube channel, though not leave any comments (probably understandably) or download the Pope2You Facebook Application. Here’s what the application allows you to do:

The application Pope2You for Facebook, lets you receive the messages of Pope Benedict XVI through the most important social network of the world.
So you can meet the Pope on Facebook, listen to his words, see his pictures, receive his messages of congratulations through “virtual postcards”.
The postcards can be sent to your “friends” on Facebook and the application can be shared with anyone.
So we can create a close sharing network around our Pope.

It’s quite refreshing that the Vatican has taken this move and goes to show how far we have come in terms of using social media. I find it hard to believe that even though the Vatican can embrace Facebook many organisations still treat it with disdain and have blanket bans on people using social networks whilst at work.
